Changing the narrative for women in recycling one day at a time
🏗️ Community ♻️ Events👷‍♀️Networking

We're back with our Women In Recycling Community s We're back with our Women In Recycling Community shout-outs this Autumn and September's is Mandy McAdam, Tradewaste Manager at Lowmac Alloys Ltd - Irvine Scotland.

We asked Mandy what she's celebrating right now and she said:

"Bringing over 100 leading industry women together to celebrate international women's day in March 2025 in Scotland, hearing from inspirational speakers about their journey within the industry."

Go on Mandy! We love to see it.

Globally, women are often stuck in informal roles Globally, women are often stuck in informal roles (waste picking, sorting) while men occupy the higher-paid technical jobs.

In the UK, the divide looks different.

Women are more likely to be in compliance, HR, and finance.

Men dominate operations, plant management, and senior commercial roles.

Different countries, same challenge: women concentrated in certain types of work, with limited routes upward.

If we want to build a stronger UK industry, we need women everywhere, from the scrapyard to the C-suite.
40,000 Jobs Coming. Will Women Get a Fair Share?

Over the next decade, the UK recycling and waste sector will (apparently) see £10 billion in investment and create 40,000 new jobs.

That’s in everything from:

HGV driving

Materials science

Operations management

Sustainability leadership

This is a huge opportunity to reshape what the industry looks like.

But if we don’t actively encourage women into these roles, the status quo will remain.

How do we make sure half of those 40,000 jobs go to women?
Recycling International’s Top 100 in Recycling 2 Recycling International’s Top 100 in Recycling 2024 featured 31 women from 15 countries, including leaders here in the UK.

That list matters. Because it shines a spotlight on women who are building businesses, innovating with tech, and negotiating deals in a male-dominated space.

Recognition sends a signal: women’s contributions are not a side note. They’re central to the future of scrap, metals, and recycling.

At our recent Women in Recycling event, Nicole got At our recent Women in Recycling event, Nicole got up to deliver the big talk of the day.

The one that had everyone leaning in. The one that left half the room in tears (the good kind). The one people will be talking about for weeks.

And where were her notes written?

On the back of one of her kid’s worksheets.

It was the most perfect reminder that mums juggle careers, families, deadlines, and everything in between, and still show up with power, humour, and heart.

Sometimes the most profound ideas aren’t written in leather-bound notebooks… they’re scribbled down while packing lunches.

Nicole, you nailed it. 👏

Here’s to every woman who’s balancing it all and still making an impact.
