Changing the narrative for women in recycling one day at a time

The clocks are going back soon, which means darker The clocks are going back soon, which means darker mornings, darker nights, and for many of us in the industry… a very real safety concern.

Women working in yards, depots, and offices late into the evening know the feeling: walking to the car park alone, locking up after dark, or waiting for that last collection in the cold.

How do you feel about working late or in the dark? Do you feel safe on site?
And what measures have your workplaces put in place to help?

Let’s open up the conversation.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned since start If there’s one thing we’ve learned since starting Women in Recycling, it’s this: community is the thing that keeps you standing when the industry knocks you flat.

This work can be isolating.

You’re out in the yard, on the road, running a business, dealing with regulators, juggling family, and trying to prove yourself in a space that doesn’t always make room for you.

But when you find people who get it... who’ve faced the same challenges, fought the same battles, and still show up every day, that changes everything.

Our community is built on women showing up for each other, in boardrooms, scrapyards, and conference halls.

That’s the power of this space.

And it’s why we’ll keep building it, louder, stronger, and together.

💛 To every woman who’s joined, shared, or supported: you’re the reason this matters.

Recycling is an industry that never stands still, Recycling is an industry that never stands still, and that can make coming back after a career break feel daunting. New tech, new regulations, new ways of working.

But here’s the other side of the story: our industry needs people who can adapt, problem-solve, and bring fresh thinking. And that’s exactly what returners do.

Whether you’re stepping back into a yard, an office, or a boardroom, the transition is easier with networks, mentoring, and allies who understand the challenges.

That’s why Women in Recycling exists: to open doors, share knowledge, and make sure women don’t feel alone as they re-enter their careers.

If you’re planning a return, or already on the journey, reach out. The community is here for you.
By 2035, every council in England will have to col By 2035, every council in England will have to collect the same core materials from households.

But the University of Birmingham just called out what many of us already know: there isn’t enough infrastructure in place to deal with that volume.

And who’s going to carry the brunt of explaining it to households, dealing with contamination, and bridging the gap between councils and processors?

Often, it’s women working in comms, ops, and frontline teams.

Simpler recycling won’t be “simple” unless industry voices are listened to.

Let’s get those voices, including women’s, at the decision-making table.

How can we, as an industry, support these incentives and plans so that they actually happen?

Meet Natalie Wain, Health Safety & Quality Control Meet Natalie Wain, Health Safety & Quality Control Manager at Ward and this month's Woman in Recycling Community Champion!

We asked Natalie what her biggest insight into the industry is right now, and she told us:

"That there doesn’t seem to be enough supply to meet demand, and I mean in relation to good quality material. Almost every load is contaminated with batteries, vapes, ‘dirt’, etc., making them a QHS nightmare."
