Changing the narrative for women in recycling one day at a time
🏗️ Community ♻️ Events👷‍♀️Networking

Who’s in your corner? This industry is built on r Who’s in your corner?

This industry is built on relationships.

And behind most successful women in recycling, there’s usually someone who backed them, supported them, or opened a door.

So let’s make that visible.

Tag or shout out a woman in this industry who’s had your back.

Whether it was advice, encouragement, or just being someone you could rely on.

Community grows when we recognise it.

We’re still working on convincing Leo, our videographer, to join the recycling sector…

But what we can say is he’s learnt a huge amount about the industry just by being around it and capturing it the way he does.

And that matters.

Because if we want to inspire the next generation into this industry, we have to show them what it actually looks like.

The people. The energy. The opportunities. Not just tell them about it.

Leo has played a big role in helping us do exactly that.

He’s a seriously talented young entrepreneur, always a joy to have on site, and someone we’d highly recommend to any business looking to create video content.
There’s something unique about this industry… so m There’s something unique about this industry… so many of our businesses are built on family.

Generations working side by side. Knowledge passed down on the yard, not in a classroom. People who didn’t just choose recycling, they grew up in it.

But what’s been really interesting to see is how that’s evolving.

For a lot of families, there was always an expectation that “the next generation” would step in.

What there wasn’t always an expectation for… was the women.

Now, we’re seeing daughters, sisters, mums, partners not just joining the business, but shaping it, leading it, and pushing it forward in completely new ways.

So we’re curious…

If you work in a family business:

Did you always know you’d be part of it?

Was it expected?

Or did you surprise yourself (and everyone else) by getting involved?

And for the women especially, was there ever a moment where you realised, “actually, this is for me too”?

🌍 It's Global Recycling Day ♻️ At our recent Wo 🌍 It's Global Recycling Day ♻️

At our recent Women in Recycling conference, one message came through loud and clear:

🚨 Cleaning up waste streams is no longer optional.

Legislation is tightening across the industry and we have plenty of challenges to navigate, but the bigger issue is what’s happening on the ground every single day.

🚨 Contamination is becoming a serious safety risk.

Battery-related fires are increasing across the UK and beyond. These incidents are:

Putting workers’ lives at risk
Damaging sites, vehicles, and infrastructure
Causing significant environmental harm

🚨 It’s a human safety issue and an industry-wide responsibility.

There are practical steps that can and should be taken now by ALL businesses:

✅ Improve segregation processes at source and on-site

✅ Invest in staff training so teams know what to look for

✅ Audit your waste streams regularly to identify contamination risks

✅ Work with trusted, transparent recycling partners

✅ Introduce clearer signage and handling procedures, especially for hazardous items like batteries and WEEE

The reality is simple: the cost of inaction is rising; financially, environmentally, and reputationally.

🚨 For the general public, recycling doesn’t start at the plant. It starts at home.

Some of the biggest risks come from everyday items being disposed of incorrectly:

Batteries, vapes, and small electricals should never go in general waste or recycling bins.

Instead:

✅ Use supermarket collection points

✅ Take items to local recycling centres

✅ Look out for dedicated e-waste bins in your community

These small actions make a huge difference in preventing fires and improving recycling outcomes.

Cleaner waste in = safer, more effective recycling out

If we want a truly circular economy, we have to start at the source.
That means better habits, better systems, and better collaboration between industry and the public.

This is a shared responsibility and an opportunity to do things properly.

Let’s keep pushing for safer, smarter, and more sustainable recycling.

Still not over this one. The Women in Recycling Still not over this one.

The Women in Recycling conference was everything we hoped it would be… and more.

The conversations.
The honesty.
The support in the room.

Seeing so many of you come together from across the industry, different roles, different journeys and just connecting properly was something special.

It’s easy to forget how powerful it is to be in a room where people just get it.

No egos. No barriers, real people, sharing real experiences.

We’re building something important here. And this was a reminder of exactly why it matters.

If you were there, thank you for being part of it.
If you missed it… we’ll see you at the next one. ♻️
